Online Learning : Pros v Cons

With the world struck by a pandemic, new solutions are required on a day to day basis to keep the globe running as normal as possible. And with the rise of innovative answers to present-day problems, comes e-learning also popularly known as online learning. Now, on the surface online learning seems to be solving a lot of issues, resuming education as it should be, providing students a platform to learn like before and most importantly giving students the ability to conveniently manage their time instead of doing all the work hastily.

But their is a lot more to online learning than just helping students. In fact, just like when any other new technology or concept is introduced, an ongoing debate has broken out on whether online learning is actually useful or not. There are quite a few pros and cons to look at and so I have made my best efforts to list all the major points below.

Pros :

- Education is not paused on. Students can continue learning and teachers can continue educating. Although, it’s a platform that will take time to be entirely comfortable with, it’s still providing a space for learning which is always good to know.

- It cuts down the traveling time. Sometimes, for parents, the whole day is spent on picking up the children and dropping them off to various locations throughout the day. Online learning saves them the hassle of moving around all day from place to place. It’s also beneficial for the students who used transportation provided by the school because those students had to wake up extremely early in order to catch the bus. But now, they can wake up feeling energized just enough to make it through the whole day.

Cons :

- It increases screen time. It’s really unhealthy for the youth to be staring at a screen for a long period of time. It can cause headaches, dry eyes, blurred vision, itchy eyes and eye discomfort.

- Another disadvantage of increased screen time is difficulty focusing. Focusing as you all know is crucial when it comes to anything to do with learning. There are also plenty of distractions around that are easily accessible to students while learning online. Being a student, I can tell you that it is really hard to focus on an online class when your phone is literally inches away from you.

- The fees should be way less in the case of online learning when compared to face-to-face learning. Now this con is what everyone is mainly focusing on and I agree. The fees should be way less because the facilities provided in online learning is incomparable to the facilities provided in face-to-face learning.

In the end, it really comes down to each person’s perspective. I believe this is a good move for temporary usage although in the long run, I don’t see online learning working out as an efficient method of learning. But if it is going to be used for a particular amount of time, the payment should be reduced to a more reasonable amount. Feel free to express your opinions in the comments below.
